SEATTLE MDF WOODEN SHUTTERS
Seattle MDF Shutters are our entry level plantation shutter product which provides a great looking shutter for most standard window situations, at a low-cost.
It is an engineered product comprising of the best off-cut timber, which is bound and laminated with epoxy to form a light, durable lumbar core.
The Seattle MDF shutter has a wipe clean surface, and is popular because of its budget price, but premium looks.
BENEFITS
- Low Cost. The MDF shutter is cheaper that any other shutter type.
- Strong. MDF is heavy and tough, therefore, it will be durable in most environments (except moist ones)
- Louvres Sizes: 47mm, 64mm, 89mm, 115mm
- Hidden and Offset Tilt Rods available (Hidden not available on 47mm louvres)
- 5 colours of hinge available
- 3 popular shades of white
- Top tracking available for doors and windows over 180cm wide
LIMITATIONS
- The max number of connected panels that can be taken from one side hinge is 3
- MDF should not be used in moist areas.
- Limited number of frames available
- The panels of the Seattle MDF shutter do not hold a reinforced support core like the hardwood products. This makes them slightly less stable than hardwood shutters, but for the average installation this is not really a problem. It may become a problem if you would like to have wide panel that you intend to swing open on a regular basis, however, it is our experience that most end users of the product do NOT use shutters in this way. Instead, they tend to keep them closed, and simply angle the louvres to affect the light.
COMPARISON TO HARDWOOD SHUTTERS
When compared to hardwood shutters, the MDF offers great value for money, however, as you would expect, there are some differences, mainly linked to the weight and finish of the product.
- MDF is heavy, and cannot be used on very large windows without extra support from a top track. The top tracking can make the product more expensive than a similar sized hardwood shutter that does not need a top track.
- MDF Shutters are coated with a PP coating (polypropylene). Paint will not dry smoothly on MDF, and so this method of coating is preferred because it gives good results. That said, it is still not as good as a hardwood finish, which is painted and extremely smooth. An orange peel effect can be seen on MDF, that is not present on hardwoods.

The Seattle MDF Shutter is still outstanding value for money, and should not be disregarded by any means. Certainly, if you can afford a hardwood shutter, then you will get a slightly better finish and more options to choose from.
